Let's hope it stays that way. The late Carl Sagan blamed Edward Teller for the nuclear arms race we have today.

At least many protested against Teller within the scientific community concerning the development and use of atomic weapons. Teller faced resistance in the political arena, also. But, he ultimately convinced the right people to make the first strike. Hopefully, the politicians of today will learn and do better.

In this vein, I'd like to point out that Teller is accused of being an extremist of views. And not religious, in this case. At least, not religious in any sense that I'm aware of.

Oh yeah, and Mac-- you guessed the precises expletive that I had in mind!

Brian, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. And concerning your comment, I'd like to say that your point makes me think of a CSPAN report I watched. Many people in the US military say that Iraqi soldiers do not quite have the habit of planning far into the feature like US troops. This is a cultural barrier that makes pulling out US troops difficult. According to the report I watched, Iraqi soldiers are so used to living in the moment that it's hard to pass on certain tactical procedures during training. I didn't make that up. Perhaps that's poor judgment on the part of our military leadership. But if there is any truth to that statement, someone who doesn't plan much for the future is either oblivious of the challenges therein, or don't believe they have much of a future to worry about. Anyone can fall victim of this. But usually, you're less of a victim if you take time to contemplate beyond tomorrow. Unless Tomorrow doesn't seem worth thinking about. Living in poor conditions can make one think this way.

People who don't worry about their future because of a bad outlook could be prone to sacrificing their lives for something that they think is bigger than themselves. Religion can often train people into looking into the hereafter-- beyond the immediate future of this "temporal" life. I fear that sort of thinking will cause people to say-- launch the nukes, we'll be fine once we reach the great by-and-by. I fear that thinking can even happen in our country due to religion more so than a dreary outlook. Especially if people in leadership "theocracsize" our government while they are in office.

So, I think I see where you're coming from, to some extent.

Lion, I think your point about Iran wanting create more anger towards the US and Israel has merit. I wonder this, too. I also agree that human nature is fickle. Nobody should have nuclear weapons. The atom bomb of WWII isn't quite what we'd be launching today. Nobody would win if we had an exchange that involved nukes.Urukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05913837011380611461noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-66957662461089748482010-01-13T11:49:54.146-06:002010-01-13T11:49:54.146-06:00Brian,

That Allah simply means God?

The problem isn't with muslims. Rather, it is with extremists.

Iran is lead by such extremists. Therein lies the problem.

Loving death seems like an oxymoron to me anyway. I don't fear death, I'm fairly certain what will happen when I die. But love it? I, frankly, do not think any land should have nukes because human nature is fickle and dangerous enough without the capability to blow up the entire planet.

I believe that Iranian officials assassinated the scientists because 1. he supported the "rebels" (read: winning party) and 2. it makes the US and Israel more disliked in a land that already really, really hates us.The Lionhttp://www.ludoandthelion.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-89667769526403665902010-01-12T22:08:26.052-06:002010-01-12T22:08:26.052-06:00Oh yeah, one more thing....

We were supposed to be fearful that those "godless bastards", the Soviets, might just decide to nuke us at any time.
I always had a feeling they wouldn't. I "knew" that they didn't wish to bring about the end of the world any more than we did. If the Super Powers were to have waged a nuclear war, the entire planet might well have been destroyed.

I am not, however, so sure that a theocracy, like Iran, run by a fanatic would be as likely to worry about the destruction of everybody/everything - for the reasons you mention here.

On an almost unrelated aside:
I find it interesting that the US is the only country, to my knowledge, that has used such Weapons Of Mass Destruction on a populace. We dropped the only Nukes ever used in war !

I know, the official line is, "We saved millions of lives by using them then raher than risk a very costly land war with Japan". But, I do not know if that is 100% true. A great many believe Japan was about to capitualte, it was only a matter of weeks.... maybe true? But we shall never know for sure :(machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04073782907747032366noreply@blogger.com
