I don't know the extent of your husbands knowledge of the system but I would suggest that he checks the system regularly, daily in my opinion. I have been trained to think of any possible way a system can fail and to find ways to test systems. I understand that may be at an extreme opposite to blind faith and ignorance to danger. (I'm not intending to call anyone in particular ignorant just wording it in a way that can be related back to religion if anyone wishes.)Zeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04359591881376157621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-1370062913819943722009-05-13T18:12:00.000-05:002009-05-13T18:12:00.000-05:00The link above is NOT connected to the mechanic my...The link above is NOT connected to the mechanic my husband is dealing with so should NOT be considered an endorsement. From what I understand there are lots of people trying to jump on this hydrogen conversion bandwagon with varying degrees of success. Both of you have mentioned concerns that are causing me to want to read up on it more. So thought I would share what I just found as I'm looking around on the web. : )Tandihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04677227443380385291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-69864256928648860692009-05-13T18:03:00.000-05:002009-05-13T18:03:00.000-05:00Here is a website that explains the process.

The hydrogen gas still contributed and it was the best example of an unforeseen accident involving hydrogen that I could think of. The fact is that every system fails at some point. Hydrogen fuel has potential for being very dangerous. Everything from displacing oxygen in a car to uncontrolled ignition. I would be concerned if people in my neighborhood had "backyard hillbilly mechanics in Alabama" converting their cars.Zeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04359591881376157621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-276999338247974462009-05-13T07:57:00.000-05:002009-05-13T07:57:00.000-05:00The Hindenburg burned like it did because of the p...The Hindenburg burned like it did because of the paint used on the blimp, not just from the hydrogen gas. I suggest checking out the MythBusters episode, where they point out the paint contained two components of modern rocket fuel.

There's more websites from reputable sources that debunk these myths than there are that question its safety. I think the experts have agreed on it's safety. If we don't use hydrogen fuel cells, it's probably for other reasons (cost, inefficiency, lack of availability, etc).

I'd be worried about the car never running again from being tinkered with. Pay close attention to the "Health effects of hydrogen" section. I would also suggest a high school chemistry book to see how hydrogen and the bi-product of oxygen can both combine with other elements and be dangerous.

Don't get me wrong though chances of these systems going wrong with scattered uses are very slim. The danger increases as the installed systems get older and begin to fail which all systems tend to do. The danger also increases with an increase in the number of cars that have this system. It is a system that needs to be researched more because of the energy potential but the danger should not be ignored.Zeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04359591881376157621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-45994385732164509732009-05-11T09:04:00.000-05:002009-05-11T09:04:00.000-05:00Well now you are scaring me, Zee! Hydrogen burns extremely ...Yeah, I can explain it. Hydrogen burns extremely well and is fairly cheap. Actually its simple to collect hydrogen from seperating the hydrogen from the oxygen in water. They have made cars that run off of water. The problem is hydrogen explosions. A vehical with a small hydrogen tank would have the potential to blow up a small neighborhood if it were to get into an accident. Anyone familiar with the Hindenburg disaster? If people were attempting to convert their cars on their own like that where my kids lived I would be extremely concerned.Zeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04359591881376157621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-59619207062304466462009-05-10T10:12:00.000-05:002009-05-10T10:12:00.000-05:00My husband is experimenting with converting his wo...My husband is experimenting with converting his work truck to hydrogen (backyard hillbilly mechanics in Alabama are doing the conversion). They are still tweaking the system and experimenting, but he has seen a significant increase in gas mileage. The main guy behind this project is getting something like 90 miles per gallon on his large pickup truck. I do not understand much about it, but apparently it is making its own hydrogen fuel as you drive. There is a lot of lost energy and it just may be enough to keep batteries charged to run an electric car. The project was going slow with lots to work out though and my portion was wrapping an aluminum hydraulic cylinder with a fiberglass composite so I wasn't extremely involved in the overall project.Zeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04359591881376157621noreply@blogger.com
