Anyone who differs is persecuted. Even the slightest deviation is cause for jail or worse. Freedom of, and from, religion is our second most sacred right (following freedom of speech and express, naturally).Nicole Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07312823319201028951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-7758497877376983002010-05-17T16:50:17.004-05:002010-05-17T16:50:17.004-05:00Harvey
Wow.
Just . . . wow.
You're not too...Harvey

Wow.

Just . . . wow.

You're not too late, Harvey. I'm glad you made that comment. I hadn't heard about the school board. I found a NY Times article about it here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/13/education/13texas.html

Some of the quotes from the Fundamentalists in this article is just dumbfounding to me. Are these guys this phenomenally blind to reality?

Take this quote for example:

“I reject the notion by the left of a constitutional separation of church and state,” said David Bradley, a conservative from Beaumont who works in real estate. “I have $1,000 for the charity of your choice if you can find it in the Constitution.”

I mean, wow! First Amendment may not actually have the words "separation of church and state" written in it, but clearly the ideal of the separation of the two is inserted right there in the First fucking Amendment!

And I mean that "fucking" in a good way. In the same way you say, "Willam. Fucking. Shatner".

I bet the guy in that quote wouldn't give $1,000 to a charity of your choice if you called him on that.

He's either being disingenuous or he's grossly ignorant of our U.S. Constitution.

Either way, it's a shame.

No Harvey-- you're just in time.

Lion:

If I were living during the Revolution back in the 1700s, I'd be proud to fight by your side.

I think we just see eye to eye on this topic about church and state, while still respecting each other's differences everywhere else. I wish the Fundamentalists could share in your enlightenment.

As for the terrorists, I don't mean to sound soft towards them. I hate what they try to do.

Snowbrush:

Welcome, and thanks for your comments. I find your blog spot interesting, by the way. The dominant number of schoolboard members voting for this change were self-described as "fundamentalist". I wonder how else they would like to pick and choose from writings of our other founders that do not support their desire for a "Christian" theocracy.Harveyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10797750710657979526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-6902894157864526922010-05-16T08:57:19.968-05:002010-05-16T08:57:19.968-05:00Uruk, I think DM just likes you :)
I just don'...Uruk, I think DM just likes you :)

I just don't understand a push towards a theocracy. Theocracies are a dangerous and very anti-American thing.I don't care if 99.999% of Americans decide tomorrow they are Christian, we should remain a Democratic Republic. It has worked just flipping fine for 234 years!

And no, America is NOT a Christian nation. Yes, we were founded by many Christians. Yes, the first people who stole this land were mostly Christians (and a rigid bunch, indeed!). But our Founders were decidedly against a Christian Nation. They wanted freedom for everyone to practice the faith of their choice, or to not practice if they choose. That is true freedom.

As for what terrorists deserve, Uruk? Fuck them. They don't even deserve jail. They certainly don't deserve citizenship. And that is all terrorists, regardless of race, creed or religion. You do not kill in the name of your ideology. It is wrong.Nicole Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07312823319201028951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-2684119373125247672010-05-16T03:26:04.507-05:002010-05-16T03:26:04.507-05:00Good points all. When Christians want to make America into a theocracy, I always wonder if they know what whichever Christian group that was in charge did to all the other Christian groups in previous Christian theocracies.

P.S. I've heard some of those quotes before-- yes, but you put an insightful spin on them for me.

And some of those points you made I had not heard about before.

Thanks.

I like a lot of what I hear from Jefferson. I realize that he is at times something of a paradox or enigma when it comes to talking justice and living it. But I generally admire much of what he's said and hope to actually read more of his writings for myself.

Fundamentalists need to realize that they cannot have their way on this issue. Their faith will not be jeopardized in any way.

Only their plans for world domination.

If Fundamentalists honestly believe in a future advent of their great prophet, savior, or deity, why do they concern themselves with taking over their nation or even the whole earth? That is their god's job to take care of that.

Or are they worried that maybe their god cannot handle that?Urukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05913837011380611461noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-22513589611427584962010-05-15T08:17:54.103-05:002010-05-15T08:17:54.103-05:00I know I may sound like a broken record at times, ...I know I may sound like a broken record at times, I quote Jefferson a lot when dealing with matters like you've written about here.
Well, he was one of the Founding Fathers. If we are to get an idea of what they meant, we can look to their writings on the subject?

"Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity"...it seems like he's touching on your idea, "what kind of christian would be acceptable?"

"But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."...this is, by definition, freedom of, and from, religion?

"Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting "Jesus Christ," so that it would read "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;" the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination"...That is very damning to the idea of the founders establishing a Christian nation!

"Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law."...odd for the author of the Constitution of a Christian nation to admit this???

Before we all get the wrong idea, Jefferson was not an Atheist. He was Deist (I know, to the fundamentalist, it's all the same). The point is, he certainly saw what religion can do when it is involved in governmental affairs, and that he WAS the framer of the Constitution.machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04073782907747032366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-33612882826146192532010-05-14T19:33:46.702-05:002010-05-14T19:33:46.702-05:00the writing on the wall...
