An apology without real regret is no apology.

"Hell" as most understand it was never in the original writings. There is strong evidence that it was added much later by the Catholic Church. And why would they do that, you ask? Money. If you can scare people into following you and then convince them that they must give you their tithing or they will be eternally tortured, they most likely will. Particularly in a time when many could not read and had no idea what the Bible said other than what their religious leaders told them it said.Nicole Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07312823319201028951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-36710730004003550212010-02-19T08:22:18.407-06:002010-02-19T08:22:18.407-06:00Lion:

However, the idea that one can be "forgiven" sins and still be in the presence of God is very clearly a New Testament concept, as well as the idea that Hell is a place of eternal torment to which one is consigned for failing to receive the gift of a personal relationship with Jesus. Judaism sees the reward for having lived a "righteous" life (i.e. having observed God's laws) as having succeded in living a righteous life. I point this out because the meanings of the words in the OT notwithstanding, the Christian concepts of heaven and hell and the possibility of "forgiveness of sin" if one truly repents are not.Harveyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10797750710657979526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-67084107962705122942010-02-18T20:42:15.456-06:002010-02-18T20:42:15.456-06:00Oh goody! Th...Oh goody! I do love a chance to explain this.

The word that is modernly translated to "hell" more accurately means "without" and the word we use to mean "Heaven" more accurately means "with the presence" so "Hell" is merely being with the presence of God. People who do not get to be in God's presence (and yes, as arrogant as this sounds, that is the reward) simply will not live on the new Earth. They will be somewhere else.Nicole Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07312823319201028951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-32630151150515166152010-02-18T16:13:20.463-06:002010-02-18T16:13:20.463-06:00I sort of between opinions. When you know about the trends of violence being higher in religious areas, you cannot help but be suspicious that this phenomena is happening here, too.

But, they dynamics could possibly differ in the military. Maybe not. That's where skepticism comes in-- and then science to follow. I'd like to see a study done on it. That would be interesting to have data help clarify whether or not religiosity and crime correlate in the military like they tend to do from nation to nation.

And even if they do, we don't know if the perpetrator was religious. I'd like to know that, too.

More importantly, I hope this story gets the attention of the military and the government as a whole. Our military is stretched thin and needs any competent volunteer they can get.Everyone should be treated with respect within the military.

As for making "mere" apologies, the world would be a better place if everyone recognized your point, Lion-- religious or not.

This thread has sort of piqued my curiosity . . . Lion, if you don't believe in eternal punishment, what justice is finally done if someone commits a crime yet can still reach heaven and God's forgiveness? Do you believe in a purgatory type of punishment, where you face a purging type of punishment that purifies you?

Or reincarnation where you come back as a bug and get squashed?Urukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05913837011380611461noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-43639843702840695652010-02-18T08:51:33.589-06:002010-02-18T08:51:33.589-06:00Ginx, can we never agree?

A mere apology does not suffice. You can say you are sorry all you want, but if you do not make amends and truly grieve your actions it makes no difference.Nicole Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07312823319201028951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-25051442854981064432010-02-17T23:30:57.757-06:002010-02-17T23:30:57.757-06:00The straight soldiers are worried that if people c...The straight soldiers are worried that if people can be openly homosexual while serving, they will be treated like the women: as objects.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02504734487692109101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-6836012539199479592010-02-17T22:13:25.743-06:002010-02-17T22:13:25.743-06:00I got into an discussion with my mom about homosex...I got into an discussion with my mom about homosexuals in the military. She thinks it's bad to allow them if they are open about it. She seemed to think that homosexuals would assault the heterosexuals or something. I suggested to her that the opposite would probably happen more often and would be assault just the same.

I'm tempted to draw similar conclusions as you, Ginx. A correlation does seem to exist between highly religious environments and violent crimes-- according to past statistics.

But I'm not sure if that phenomena applies to the military. It just might, though. I considered saying something about that when I posted the link, but I decided not to because I haven't seen any statistics specific to the armed forces. But, I do lean towards the same suspicions as you.Urukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05913837011380611461noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-5792347152120055912010-02-17T12:32:38.152-06:002010-02-17T12:32:38.152-06:00The misogyny is all the more alarming in light of ...The misogyny is all the more alarming in light of the overtly Evangelical Christian atmosphere of the military. I thought Christian men were supposed to be gentlemen... can't say I'm surprised they're nothing but animals when they follow a belief that assures them all will be forgiven if they merely apologize.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02504734487692109101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-24574158759328447572010-02-17T07:59:02.835-06:002010-02-17T07:59:02.835-06:00How far we have come, huh? It should be without question that any military individual that commits such an egregious act should be - at the least - dishonorably discharged and charged with the rape.

Women have the right to serve their country just the same as men. And just the same as men, they have the right to do so without feeling threatened by their fellow soldiers.
