"..."Judge not that ye be not judged"

"Vengeance is mine saith the Lord"

I am always at a loss to understand anyone's need for secular prohibitions against any non-believer failing to observe what some religious majority sees as "God's" law. In this case, (Ireland), if there is actually someone wronged by blasphemy, it would be God, Himself, and He has given believers ample information on how He chooses to address those who may have wronged Him "by taking His name in vain," I don't think I have heard anyone claim that if they do not prevent me from blaspheming that they will suffer any punishment from the Lord. That being the case, there are only two possible reasons that I can imagine to support anti-blasphemy laws:
1) Those making and/or enforcing them have insufficient faith to withstand any doubt on my part and/or
2) They are concerned that my blasphemy will somehow cause someone else to "fall away" (perhaps a child, for intstance).
Needless to say, if we are discussing more personal and life threatening consequences for blasphemy, neither Christianity nor Islam can support such responses to blasphemy on Scriptural grounds (i.e neither the New Testament nor the Koran support violence against unbelievers {see above})Harveyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10797750710657979526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3547195737073832993.post-11606417877246781892010-01-07T12:32:39.322-06:002010-01-07T12:32:39.322-06:00Well, the Lion is dead on here. I thought about doing a post on that, but you've summed it up nicely here.
I agree.

If I a strict adherent of any religion, does that not constitute blasphemy of all the other religions?

If I say Jesus is the way, the truth, the light - is that not saying the muslims are wrong? That may not seem disrespectful to a christian, but to a muslim, it seems like I just said his god was false. Conversely, the muslim believes Jesus was merely a man - to the christians chagrin.

These blasphemy laws do indeed seem like a very slippery slope. If we are to follow them to the "letter of the law", we may find ourselves unable to worship anything, for fear it will offend another faiths principles.

AND, notice, nowhere is the unbeliever protected in any these laws. Spewing death threats, or killing someone, or even speaking hatred is not doing so - regardless of what the other party has done.

Blasphemy, and any laws that exist only to uphold religious principles, are unconstitutional. That alone should be reason to eschew them. It is clearly not, however, since we still have blue laws and abstinence only education. It is shameful.

Blasphemy laws are supported by people that do not want to (or cannot) justify their faith and therefore hope to avoid anyone questioning them.

My faith is important to me, no doubt. But to put have these types of laws is to take away essential freedoms. And if we take away the freedoms of those that disagree with us, who will stop someone else from taking away my freedom? Once you start down that path, it never really stops. I'd prefer we never take that first step. The Lionhttp://www.ludoandthelion.comnoreply@blogger.com
